Are you being too hard on yourself?

by | 1 Jul 2022

Did you see the article about Natalie Barr in Stellar magazine? Natalie Barr is the highly personable, intelligent and talented co-host of Sunrise.

She was explaining how she finally felt comfortable in the TV hosting role now and was owning it, deservedly so. Natalie has been on breakfast television for 20 years, not as the main star but certainly close.

It made me think, why did it take so long for her, given her calibre and experience, to feel comfortable? Was it imposter syndrome? Was it confidence? Or something else. Because to the outsider, it’s hard to see how it was the jump that it seemed to be.

But on this flip side of this, I know she’s not alone. There are many other women who can surely relate to feeling the transition – despite the experience and skills they have.

I’m no Natalie Barr and it still took me close to 10 years of running a business before I believed I’ve earned my stripes and I’m sure there are others. For me, it wasn’t clocking in one more case study, it was a complete mindset shift.

I did a massive exercise into limiting beliefs and it was only through this exercise that I recognised the facts that finally overrode my reluctance and hesitancy to show up as the leader I’ve been working towards being for so long.

If you are feeling like you don’t yet belong, you’re not good enough or deserve the role you have, here are 3 strategies that will shift your thinking:

  1. Write down all the evidence/examples of what you have done and achieved that prove your capabilities and talents
  2. Brainstorm what action you would need to take to feel differently about your self doubt or limiting beliefs
  3. Reach out to an expert in the field that relates to your concerns/limiting beliefs who can enable you to work through and smash them once and for all.

No one says you have to do this on your own or suffer in silence! The day I decided to think differently was when I was confronted with the quote: That which holds you back will set you free.

What is holding you back from showing up the way your heart desires?

Sometimes I think to myself, “How am I going to smash this mammoth task?”  Can you relate? Case in point this morning, going the gym. Most mornings, I’m up at at 5.30, gym by 6 for a class and a little extra. This morning, a big, intense workout did not seem...
